Liposuction for Double Chin (Submental Liposuction)
Aesthetics of the neck, chin and jawline are contributing factors in overall facial beauty. The morphology of the chin neck region in profile view is a potentially important determinant of perceived attractiveness. The angle of attractiveness which is formed between the chin and neck is between 105 degrees and 120 degrees. This angle is obliterated due to deposition of fat and many individuals irrespective of their age struggle with fat under the chin and jawline commonly known as “double chin” which is considered unattractive by many. This fatty deposit can be inconsistent with the rest of their body and the person can look overweight when it may not be the case. They find it very difficulty to deal with double chin with diet and exercise. The fat in this area can be treated with a simple procedure called as Submental liposuction. Dr. Rani’s goal is to dramatically reshape the contours of the neck and face and create a defined profile that reveals your optimal facial structure.
Occasionally, patients can present with slightly relaxed skin with reduced skin elasticity. Dr. Rani evaluates them to rule out the need for neck lift procedure and uses Renuvion or NeckTite© apparatus to tighten the skin. Renuvion (J-Plasma) Or NeckTite© are energy based devices(EBD) which have a tiny probe that is inserted through the same tiny incision made for liposuction. These EBD’s emit radiofrequency to heat the skin from the inside thus inducing the production of more collagen and skin tightening over the months following surgery.
What is submental liposuction?
Submental liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure to reduce excess fat deposits in the submental fat area which lies below the chin and jaw. It reduces the appearance of double chin and improves the contour and definition of chin, neck and jawline.

Goal:
The goal of neck contouring surgery is a youthful or at least a graceful looking neck and a defined jawline.
Procedure:
Submental liposuction is typically performed under local anesthesia/twilight anaesthesia or general anesthesia when combined with other procedures. Typically, tiny 2-3mm incisions are placed under the chin and behind the earlobes. The procedure generally takes 30min to an hour and when performed alone is a day care procedure.
Recovery:
You can expect some swelling, bruising and discomfort in the chin and neck area on the day of surgery. Dr. Rani will prescribe pain medications to manage pain and discomfort. You can also experience numbness and tingling in the operated area that typically resolves over the next few weeks. You will be advised to keep your head elevated and wear pressure garment to reduce the swelling and avoid strenuous activity. You should maintain hydration and follow a healthy diet. You will likely need approximately 4-5 days off from work, and you will quickly be able to enjoy your new, enhanced neck, and more attractive facial profile.
The final results of submental and neck liposuction will be seen around 3 months following the procedure.

Risks:
Dr. Rani makes every effort to execute the procedure meticulously. However, like any surgery, patients can notice swelling in the operated area and bruising can be present sometimes. Tiny incisions fade away in few weeks. There can be numbness and hardness of tissues under the chin which resolves in a few weeks or months. Very rarely, there can be inadequate skin tightening, skin irregularities, changes in skin sensation, infection or bleeding. Are There Any Alternatives To Surgical Submental Liposuction?
Lipolytic injections provide modest improvements in double chin. Series of one to six treatments are administered at an interval of one month. These injections are administered directly into the fat below the chin which destroys the fat cells. It causes swelling and some tenderness in the treated area which resolves over a few days. Normal activity is resumed immediately after injection.
Can Submental Liposuction Be Combined With Other Procedures?
Many of Dr. Rani’s patients combine their submental liposuction procedure with other cosmetic procedures. Chin augmentation with implants, Facial fat grafting, buccal fat reduction, Botox©, hyaluronic injectable fillers such as Juviderm© and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, are the commonly combined procedures.
