Labiaplasty

Labia minora are the skin folds surrounding the vagina just under the labia majora that extends down below the clitoris. In some women these folds of skin enlarge to varying extent and can cause chaffing by rubbing against each other and the surrounding skin. An increase in moisture content can also cause these folds to cling together, causing irritation and discomfort. While other women simply dislike the way their labia minora look, others gripe about how difficult it is to maintain hygiene while they are menstruating. Labia minora can expand and darken as a result of hormonal changes that the body experiences throughout pregnancy, puberty, menopause, and aging. Given that they may be noticeable to both them and their sexual partners, these changes can be the cause of concern for many women. The enlarged labia minora can occasionally make it difficult to engage in sexual activity.

Labiaplasty is the most frequently performed surgical cosmetic procedure of the genital area. It is typically carried out to reduce the size of the labia minora. During labiaplasty the labia minora are either shortened or reshaped. Excess tissue is removed using a scalpel or laser, and the resulting loose edge is carefully stitched with dissolvable sutures.

It is important to note that labiaplasty is not recommended for girls under the age of 18, as the labia continue to develop from puberty into early adulthood. Dr. Rani will thoroughly discuss the reasons for considering labiaplasty with you and guide you towards the procedure that best aligns with your expectations and goals, based on the initial assessment.

Ideal candidate for Labiaplasty:
  • You are in good physical and mental health.
  • You are over 18 years old.
  • You have enlarged labia caused by factors such as childbirth, aging, sexual activities, or genetics.
  • You desire to address asymmetry of the labia minora or labia majora.
  • You seek relief from physical discomfort.
  • You wish to enhance the appearance of your genitalia.
Recovery will involve the following elements:
  • It is recommended to take approximately 2 weeks off from work for proper recovery.
  • The complete healing of the skin may take a few months.
  • Pain management will be addressed with the provision of painkillers to alleviate any discomfort.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the treated area and prevent infections.
  • Opt for loose-fitting underwear and clothing.
  • Refrain from sexual activity for approximately 6 weeks.
  • Avoid engaging in physical activities for a period of 6 to 12 weeks.
What should you expect:

Genital tissue is rarely “smooth and regular” prior to surgery, and that it will not be so after a surgical procedure. Patient can realistically expect reduction in size, and the cosmetic and functional benefits that may accrue from that, but they cannot expect “perfection,” exact symmetry, or a specific outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

The choice of surgical technique for labiaplasty will be determined by Dr. Rani based on the desired resizing or reshaping of your labia.

Trim procedure: Excess tissue is removed from the outer edge of one or both sides of your labia minora to achieve symmetry with or containment within the edges of your labia majora.

Wedge procedure: A wedge or pie-shaped section of tissue is removed from the inner areas of one or both sides of your labia minora. Similarly, if you are opting for labia majora reduction, an inner portion of each labium of your labia majora will be removed.

To increase the size of your labia majora, your surgeon can extract a small amount of fat from another area of your body and inject it into your labia majora. Alternatively, the injection of hyaluronic acid into your labia majora can be considered.

A standard labiaplasty procedure usually takes less than two hours.

Following your labiaplasty, it is normal to experience swelling and bruising in the treated area for approximately two weeks. Dr. Rani will prescribe pain medications and antibiotics. Cold compresses should be applied to the operated area for 10 -15 minutes, resting for 40 minutes before reapplication. A spray bottle filled with lukewarm water can be used while urinating to soothe the stinging sensation. After passing stools the area needs to be cleaned with water. Pat dry the area after cleaning with water. Avoid swimming or soaking in water until Dr. Rani suggests it is safe to do so. Use clean, cotton, loose fitting undergarments. During this time, it is important to refrain from engaging in physical activities and sexual intercourse for a period of six weeks.
